Galveston

As a Houston resident, I love that I can get to the beach in an hour (sans traffic).

So......I tend to do that as much as time permits.  The pocket beach parks are perfect - if you go to the far north end of the island toward the state park, you will see them.  You pull into the parking lot and you can literally park right up on the sand just in front of the waves (if you wanted).

My favorite eating spot is the Cafe Michael Burger & German food - you can sit outside and watch the waves roll on the sea from the outdoor patio - perfect end to a day at the beach or the perfect break from the beach before you go back.
